Being Buddhist

Spirituality is an important part of most people’s lives, especially for those who feel the need to have an understanding of who we are and where we fit in this world. Nichiren Buddhism is one way of helping understand just this.

Through teachings we learn that all living creatures are interconnected, so every action whether positive or negative affects ourselves, those around us and the world in general.

Our lives are indistinguishable with the universe and the universe is indistinguishable with us. Consequently, we choose to be sincere and honorable in all that we do.

There are three important components in the teachings; practice, faith and study. Equally important to our thinking is cause and effect and karma.

Our daily ritual consists of chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo and the recitation of excerpts or prayers from the Lotus Sutra. Nam means devotion or the act of practicing, myoho is the mystic law or the law of life, renge is the lotus or the cause and effect and kyo is the sutra or truth spoken through one’s voice.

Through diligently practicing these three components we obtain enlightenment and thus Buddhahood, a nature that we believe is innate in all of us.

One of the wonderful aspects of Nichiren Buddhism is that it accepts and respects all people in all walks of life.

There is an overall feeling of comfort, warmth and honesty that is quite often hard to find in our world. Its purpose is never to restrict or constrain, but to allow personal freedom and growth.

In these tough times, this practice helps one cope with and change the destiny of the self as well as the world. Our goal for all is peace and happiness.
